New Logo "Stands Out"

After months of research and focus group meetings, Shawnee State University has launched a new "look," or brand, that includes a new logo for the university, a new logo for the Athletic Department, and a new marketing campaign designed to attract more students.

Shantytown promotes homelessness awareness

Students camp in make-shift hovels to raise funds for the homeless shelter

The fifth annual Shantytown fundraiser and homelessness awareness event took shape April 21 in front of Massie Hall in the form of a multitude of cardboard hovels. Students lived in their makeshift shelters through April 23 in order to simulate the hardships that the homeless often endure, while collecting donations for the local homeless shelter.

Phi Eta Sigma inducts new members

Scientist lectures on faith, evolution

Dr. Keith Miller, a paleontologist from Kansas State University, lectured on "Darwin's Forgotten Defenders: Then and Now" April 17 in the main theatre of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts as part of the Jane M.G. Job Fair for Students Scheduled at SSU

Many students coming to Shawnee State University will be looking for part time work in August. New students will begin arriving at the university on Aug. 15 just before the new semester begins on Aug. 19. SSU Freezes Fall Tuition Rates

Shawnee State University has elected to freeze its fall tuition rates despite the approval of a two-year budget passed by state lawmakers earlier this week that permits state universities to increase tuition rates by 3.5 percent in each of the next two academic years.

New Technologies help teach foreign language

SSU professor Julia Coll and some of her intermediate Spanish students presented a new way of learning foreign language in the classroom Thursday April 9, during The Celebration of Scholarship. The presentation was based on a program called Skype which has been around for some time, but is just now being used in the foreign language department at SSU.

Four-part film on Appalachia scheduled at Shawnee State University

A special screening of the four-part film "Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People" will be shown in the Flohr Lecture Hall at Shawnee State University's Clark Memorial Library from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28. The screening is free and open to the public as a gift from Will and Barb Burke.

Student from Kenya wins Rotary scholarship

The Portsmouth Rotary recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Alihussein Noordin, of Nairobi, Kenya. He is the first recipient of the Scholarship for International Students.
